I was on Twin Cities Live today, sharing my top hits and misses from Benefit Cosmetics, L'Oreal, Bare Minerals and NYX. This is what I wore, but let me tell you: it took a lot to get to this stage.
About 2 hours before the show, I realized that my bangs were waaaay too long and needed a trim. STAT. Don't tell my hairstylist, because she hates it when I trim them myself. Dan asked me how much wine I'd had before grabbing the scissors...which is a fair question, since that's usually my MO. However, this was midday and I was working and I had to be on TV so NONE, thank you very much.
One of the most fun parts of doing these segments is pulling out all the products and looking at them. You guys lovingly hold your beauty products and whisper sweet nothings to them, too, right?
I put on my TV makeup twice today, as evidenced by this face wipe. Because OF COURSE I put everything on the first time and stared at my reflection wondering what in the world had gone so, so wrong. Re-do! Happens to everyone. Usually right before a big event.
My friend and fellow Twin Cities Live regular Laurie Crowell was on-set today. She turned Wild Rice soup into a Wild Rice hotdish. It smelled amazing and tasted even better!
Mmmmm...just look at that beautiful baby. You can buy the MN-shaped hotdish dish (hotdish dish...I guess that's a thing) at Laurie's store, Golden Fig Fine Foods.
And, coming full circle. I picked this outfit because I don't think I've worn this lace dress from Christopher and Banks on Twin Cities Live, before. I thought the military-style denim jacket (Torrid) and mixed metal necklace (Lane Bryant...ages ago) contrasted nicely with the ultra-feminine dress. The belt (Lane Brant outlet, also a long time ago) was a must because it's easier for the sound guys at TCL to attach my mike there than to snake it down the back of my dress and clip it to my bra. Perhaps more than you wanted to know...tights from Avenue and booties from Payless.
Happy New Year, everybody! I hope you enjoyed any of the holidays that you might have celebrated last month. Dan and I celebrated Christmas in Iowa with my family. We drove to Des Moines from St. Paul on Christmas Eve...well, we meant to. But we got stuck in Story City, IA that afternoon thanks to a snowstorm that shut down the interstate. (See the gas station feast we enjoyed on my Instagram). We woke up at 4:30 AM on Christmas morning, jumped in the car and made it to my parents' place before the kids woke up to see what Santa brought them. It was great!
Dan and I were back in STP ahead of New Year's Eve, and I stopped by Twin Cities Live to share my predictions for which beauty trends are on their way out in 2016 - and which ones we'll all be mastering throughout the coming year. For the appearance, Ashley Stewart sent me a gorgeous body-con dress to wear.
Body-con = hugs every curve. The dress is really well made, with a beautiful open neckline and flattering horizontal pleats. And the color! I need more of this royal blue/purple color in my life. You know what, though? I almost didn't wear it.
The first time I pulled the dress on and looked at myself in the mirror, I couldn't see the dress. I couldn't even really see me. All I noticed was the way it hugged my stomach. This isn't a style I typically wear, and I felt completely out of my depth in it. At first. For about 20 minutes. Then I lifted my eyes and looked at the whole picture. I'm not just a stomach. Or simply any other single feature. I'm me. And the entirety of me really loved this dress!
That's something I'm going to be mindful of in 2016: not whittling myself (or others...or life situations) into pieces, but taking it all in and appreciating the big picture.
Is there anything in particular that you're going to be mindful of in the new year?
